Overview

The Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation (commonly known as F-REI) is a special corporation established on April 1, 2023 under the Act on Special Measures for the Reconstruction and Revitalization of Fukushima.
In addition to providing dreams and hopes for realizing the reconstruction of Fukushima and other prefectures in the Tohoku region, F-REI aims to become a world-renowned “central institute for creative reconstruction” which drives forward with enhancing the scientific capabilities, technological capabilities and industrial competitiveness of Japan and contributes to economic growth and improvement to the daily lives of people living in Japan.

Greetings from the President

The Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation (F-REI) is a special corporation newly established by the national government in April 2023 under the Act on Special Measures for the Reconstruction and Revitalization of Fukushima. I was appointed by Prime Minister Kishida as the first president of F-REI.
More than 10 years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred. However, the Fukushima Hamadori area and other areas which have suffered from the nuclear disaster still face medium-term and long-term challenges, such as a declining population, a shortage of industrial workers, and remaining vast pieces of unused or underused land due to the effects of long-term evacuations and other factors.

  • (1) Missions of F-REI
The major missions of F-REI are to provide dreams and hopes for realizing the reconstruction of Fukushima and other prefectures in the Tohoku region. The goal is to do this while becoming a world-renowned “central institute for creative reconstruction” that raises the industrial competitiveness of Japan to the highest level in the world and contributes to economic growth and improvement to the daily lives of people living in Japan.
  • (2) Promotion of World-Class Research, and Social Implementation and Industrialization of Its Results
For the missions above, at F-REI we will not only conduct research and development, but also work on social implementation and industrialization of research results and human resource development as our main tasks in order to resolve the problems in Fukushima and around the world. At the same time, F-REI will also play a role as a control center with a coordinating function to realize interdepartmental research by research facilities and other organizations already located in Fukushima.
  • (3) Central Institute for Creative Reconstruction
To ensure that the establishment of F-REI affects a wide area, F-REI will realize a “diverse and unique field of research, demonstration, and social implementation in the world.” It will also disseminate information globally by collaborating with local municipalities, residents, companies, organizations, etc., in various forms of partnership and considering not only the facilities of F-REI but also the environment outside F-REI as an extensive field of demonstration research.

These extremely important missions of F-REI may not be accomplished soon, but at F-REI we will work with all our heart and soul to produce results one by one and to contribute to Fukushima and Japan. We would greatly appreciate your support and cooperation.
