Call for Researchers

1. Description

The Regional Environmental Co-Creation Unit under Research Area 5, “Collection and Dissemination of Data and Knowledge on Nuclear Disasters,” conducts research aimed at understanding and predicting the environmental behavior of radioactive materials in areas affected by nuclear disasters. This research aims to facilitate environmental recovery through measures such as suppressing the transfer of these substances to natural resources and enabling their safe utilization.

The Unit also engages in risk assessment and risk communication based on research outcomes, as well as the verification of environmental dynamics and disaster response during the initial stages of a nuclear disaster. Through these efforts, it aims to support the long-term environmental recovery of Fukushima and strengthen preparedness for future nuclear disasters.

Specific activities include analyzing the behavior of and predicting future trends regarding radioactive substances in forests, rivers, lakes, and other environmental systems; accelerating model computations and enhancing environmental dynamics models using AI, machine learning, data assimilation, and related methods; and the elucidation of radiocesium transfer mechanisms to forest resources and freshwater fish, as well as the development of methods for their safe utilization.

Applications are invited for several fixed-term researcher positions within the Regional Environmental Co-Creation Unit of the Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation (F-REI). Successful candidates will engage in tasks such as developing and refining high-precision models for the environmental dynamics and future prediction of radioactive substances, integrating forests, rivers, and lakes, as well as elucidating the transfer characteristics of radioactive cesium to forest resources and developing methods for their safe utilization.

We welcome researchers who are highly motivated to actively promote collaborative research and academic exchange with research institutions in Japan and abroad and to engage in international collaborative research, including potential collaborations with Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

2. Deadline for Submission of application forms

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.
Applications will close once the positions have been filled.
