The Fukushima Institute for Research, Education and Innovation (F-REI) and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) have signed a memorandum of cooperation (MOC) on joint research in robotics and autonomous systems.
The F-REI delegation, led by President Dr. YAMAZAKI Koetsu, visited the UK and participated in the signing ceremony held at the Culham Campus of UKAEA on 4 March.
The MOC was signed by Dr. Yamazaki and UKAEA Executive Director Prof. Rob Buckingham.
Memorandum of Cooperation
The MOC fosters Japan-UK collaboration between the government-funded organisations, enhancing joint research opportunities and advancing science and innovation in key technical areas, such as:
- Robotics and autonomous systems: supporting nuclear decommissioning, operations in challenging environments and advanced manufacturing
- Facility management and collaboration: sharing best practices in research facilities, harnessing a culture of innovation and commercialisation
- Talent and skills: initiatives to drive partnerships and support talent and skills development.

(1) F-REI delegation attended a facility tour and discussion with experts at UKAEA's world-class robotics centre RACE (Remote Applications in Challenging Environments) at Culham.
(2) F-REI delegation visited the Sellafield sites in Cumbria.
(3) F-REI delegation also visited RAICo1* facilities at Whitehaven.
*UKAEA is a member of the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Collaboration (RAICo) alongside the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Sellafield Ltd and the University of Manchester.
